1.MAYAMOHINI   (20 CR) 


Cast:Dilip,Biju Menon,Baburaj,Mythili,Laxmi Rai; Direction : Jose Thomas  
    
Mayamohini once again proved Dileep's versatility as he donned the role of a  man on run who dresses up as a woman out of circumstances and the comic situations arising out of it.Then there was baburaj and biju menon's comedy as well.Mythili and laxmi rai did the female leads.The comedy worked well with the family audience and movie went on to become a block buster and the highest grossing malayalam movie of 2012.


2.ORDINARY    (15 CR)

Cast: Kunchako Boban,Biju Menon,Shritha,Ann,Asif Ali Direction : Sugeeth

Ordinary was the first malayalam block-buster of 2012 directed by first time director Sugeeth.The movie captured the picturesque locale of Gavi through brilliant cinematography.Biju Menon-Kunchako Boban pair entertained the audience.Ann Augustine and debutant Shritha did the female leads and Asif Ali also had his first hit for 2012.Another character in the movie was a Kerala State Transport bus which took the narrative forward.


3.RUN BABBY RUN  (14 CR)

Cast : Mohanlal,Amala Paul,Biju Menon Director : Joshiy

RBR saw veteran director joshiy again with mohanlal after they had teamed up previously for Christian Brothers.The movie was produced by Milan Jaleel and Sachi of the Sachi-Sethu duo independently wrote it.Amala Paul did the female lead and Mohanlal sung aattumanal payayil under ratheesh vega's music direction which went on to become a chartbuster and the movie no.1 in 2012 onam.


4.THATTATHIN MARAYATHU   (12 CR)

Cast : Nivin Pauly,Isha Talwar,Srinivasan Director : Vineeth Sreenivasan

TM was vineeth srinivasan's second directorial venture after Malarvadi Arts Club produced by Lumiere Film Company,co-owned by his father sreenivasan and actor mukesh.In Vineeth's own words,his inspiration was a short story written by M J Akbar.Nivin Pauly was the male lead and debutant Isha Talwar the female lead.Kerala once again saw/heard actress remya nambeesan's singing talent through "Muthuchippi Poloru".Though the movie opened to mixed reviews,the audience loved the love story and vineeth had his first blockbuster as a director.

5.MY BOSS  (12 CR)


Cast : Dileep,Mamta,Kalabhavan Shajon

My Boss had Dileep and Mamta together for the second time after their earlier successful outing Passenger.Director Jithu Joseph had his third succesive hit and this time the biggest yet.East coast vijayan too had a hit after earlier failures as a producer.Dileep-Mamta pair was a hit among audience.The movie was an unofficial adaptation of English Movie the proposal.Kalabhavan shajon too scored with his comic acts in the movie.


6.USTHAD HOTEL   (09 CR)


Cast: Dulquer Salman,Nithya Menen,Thilakan,Siddique  Direction :Anwar Rasheed

Anwar Rasheed (Director) teamed up with London based NRK Anjali Menon (script) to come out with Usthad Hotel.The movie was produced by Listin Stephen known for producing new-gen movies like traffic and chappa-kurisu.This was one of the veteran actor thilakan's last movies.Food and hospitality are the central themes of the movie.The film also throws light to the world of underprivileged people struggling to quench their hunger and the rich trying to eat up the poor and the marginalised.Dulqar Salman did the lead and had his second successive hit.Nithya Menen did the female lead.The song "appangal embadum" was criticised for twisting with the original but went on to become a chartbuster.


7.MALLU SINGH    (8.50 CR)

Cast : Kunchako Boban,Unni Mukundan,Samvrutha Sunil,Biju Menon 
Direction : Vysakh

Director Vysakh repeated his seniors team for Mallu singh with the exception of jayaram, and supposedly with Prithviraj as the lead,which eventually went to Unni Mukundan due to date issues.The movie was written by Sethu and produced by Neeta Anto.The locale was set between Punjab and South kerala.The movie got average reviews but was a success at the box-office. 


8.THE KING AND THE COMMISSIONER     (8.20 CR)

Cast : Mammooty,Suresh Gopi,Samvrutha Sunil Direction :  Shaji Kailas

This one saw stalwarts like Mammootty,Suresh Gopi,Shaji Kailas and Renji Panicker together mounting up the hype and the cost as well.It had a huge initial but the gross didn't match the cost and hence the return on investment,if any at all,was on the lower side.Some trade analysts classifed it as a flop as well.



 9.SPIRIT   (8.00 CR) 


Cast : Mohanlal,Kaniha,Madhu  Direction : Ranjith

Ranjith taking inspiration out of the fact that his previous movie Indian Rupee was critically appreciated and did well at the box office decided to come out again with a movie which had a social message.His idea worked and the movie was a hit.Mohanlal once again proved his calibre as one of the best actors in India.Movie dealt with alcoholism and was exempted from tax by the Kerala State Government.In Renjith's own words "The movie does not, in any way, advocate or proscribe alcohol. Spirit discusses the subject and examines what happens when a person, however intelligent, falls prey to an addiction, any addiction for that matter". The movie had its own share of controversies.Firstly, the fall out between Actor Prakash Raj,who was supposed to do a pivotal character and director Ranjith.Prakash Raj was eventually replaced by Sankar Ramakrishnan.The film was also alleged of plagiarism  by Abdul Azeez, a short film maker and assistant director  from his short film My Hero But Big Zero.He said that the character of plumber maniyan was copied from the protagonist of his film.


10.GRANDMASTER   (7.00 CR)  

Cast : Mohanlal,Priya Mani,Babu Antony Direction : B.Unnikrishnan

B.Unnikrishnan teamed up with Mohanlal after their blockbuster success Madambi to come out with a neo-noir thriller named Grandmaster.It was also the first production venture of UTV Motion Pictures in Malayalam. Priyamani did the female lead and others in cast were Anoop Menon, Babu Antony and Jagathy Sreekumar.It was also first Malayalam films available for internet video streaming in the U.S. and Canada through Netflix.The story of the film draws inspirations from Agatha Christie's detective novel The A.B.C. Murders. and the characterisation of the protagonist is  inspired from Hercule Poirot, the detective in the novel as well as the Swedish detective, Wallander.The movie also shows the lead character's fascination with the game of chess and hence named Grandmaster.
